Guwahati: As the Ambubachi Mela kicks off on Wednesday, the city's traffic police have made elaborate arrangements for the movement of vehicles.
Inter-district buses or heavy vehicles will not be allowed to enter the city from Jalukbari point to avert traffic jams.
Considered to be the biggest religious congregation in eastern India, the fair draws thousands of devotees belonging to the Shakti sect of Hinduism to Kamakhya Temple atop the Neelachal hills.
This time, the fair will continue till June 26.
Deputy commissioner of police (traffic) Pranab Jyoti Goswami has urged devotees to avail themselves of the Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) bus service from the foothills of Kamakhya to the temple.
No inter-district or long-distance buses, including those operated by the ASTC, will be allowed to enter DG Road, MG Road or TR Phukan Road.
Restrictions on movement of vehicular traffic in and around Kamakhya Temple and surrounding areas, particularly on MG Road, DG Road, TR Phukan Road and the road towards the temple from the foothills, are already in place.
Traffic police have also barred two-wheelers (except vehicles allowed by the authorities) from entering the road leading from the foothills of Kamakhya to the temple. Only vehicles with valid passes and those approved by authorities will be allowed to move in this area.

The Kamrup (Metro) district administration has issued special passes for the vehicles of officials on duty and other important personalities.
Goods-laden vehicles with special passes will be allowed to enter between 12am and 7am. As soon as the goods are unloaded, the vehicles will be sent back to the Kamakhya foothills.
Meanwhile, parking has been banned till Monday on all stretches of DG Road - from Maligaon Chariali to Bharalumukh Point, PNGB Road, and from Maligaon Chariali Point to the railway station - and on Maligaon-Pandu Road - from Maligaon Chariali to Pandu.
