Just when the infiltration attempts along the Line of Control (LoC) and the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir had slowed down to a trickle in 2015, beginning 2016 until the start of June, the trend has turned upside down.

There have been more than 50 attempts of infiltration from January 2016 to June 2016, which was was zero last year during the same period.

According to the official year-end data released by the ministry of defence (MoD), till September 30 in 2014, only 92 infiltrations took place which was significantly low from 221 in 2014. About 60 terrorists have been killed so far this year as against only 37 last year. Army has lost 11 of its men so far and 28 of them got seriously injured.

Even as the new trend has got the security establishment in Delhi worrying, reliable intelligence sources told dna that what is even more of concern to them is the increasing number of sleeper cells in the state that have been found active in executing the terrorist attacks in the state.

The period just before winter onset is a desperate phase for infiltrators where apart from hardened terrorists, the new recruits have also to be brought to the handlers based on the Indian side before snowfall that mars their chances until March- April when it melts.

An official said that the worrying trend this year also has to do with the summer arriving early and melting of snow.

Jammu and Kashmir has more than 500 kilometres of LoC that separates it from the Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK). POK is the launchpad from where the infiltrators try and sneak into India. Army sources say there are close to 10 active such launchpads across the border. Each launchpad serves as a hideout for about 30-40 infiltrators generally, the source said.
