Chennai: Andipatti AIADMK MLA Thanga Tamilselvan caused some uneasiness for the ruling party in the assembly on Tuesday by saying prohibition could not be imposed in the state.
His logic was that private firms had sunk several crores for setting up distilleries and breweries, and imposition of prohibition would mean that those investments would go waste.
He said, “While PMK, DMK and PWF said the first signature will be to impose liquor prohibition, only Amma said prohibition will be imposed step by step. But is it possible to impose complete prohibition in the state? I think it is not possible by any party“. As his views went against the stated policy of the ruling party to impose prohibition in a phased manner in the state, ministers and speaker P Dhanapal felt discomfiture.
State excise minister P Thangamani stood up to clarify that the government was keen on imposing prohibition step by step. Still, Tamilselvan was unstoppable. He continued, “They say prohibition will be imposed in a phased manner.I doubt whether it is possible“. With no other option left W before him, Dhanapal asked Tamilselvan to wind up his speech apparently to avoid further embarrassment.
Tamilselvan started his speech saying, “I will not speech saying, “I will not speak outside the governor's speech, but have all DMK MLAs including Duraimurugan read the speech in full“?
Speaker intervened at this juncture and asked him to address him instead of speaking to DMK MLAs. But the AIADMK MLA continued to address the DMK MLAs.
As DMK MLAs were on their feet to protest, ministers looked at each other with disbelief. Duraimurugan, seizing the opportunity , gestured to finance minister O Panneerselvam to know whether there were problems between him and Tamilselvan. He was apparently referring to the turf war going on in Theni district between the two AIADMK functionaries.
