With increasing industrial production, Thoothukudi has turned into a booming industrial town. Despite having key resources including power, manpower, water and land, which cater to the growing needs of industrial growth at micro level, Thoothukudi stands in need of a skill development centre. Such a centre was essential to produce skilled personnel in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu.
Hence, All India Chamber of Commerce and Industries (AICCI), Thoothukudi has submitted a memorandum to Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy. Mr Rudy was on a visit to Thoothukudi on Sunday last when he attended a programme organised by the Bharatiya Janata Party, P.S.S.K. Raja Sankaralingam, President, AICCI, Thoothukudi told The Hindu here on Tuesday.
As the third largest seaport in India, Thoothukudi has facilitated several large and small scale industries ranging from Heavy Water Plant, thermal power generation plant, chemical-based industries, seafood companies and its processing units and salt industry. These industries required skilled manpower.
Scores of girls and boys were passing out of schools and colleges every year in different disciplines, but their skill sets had little value and therefore the need for enhancementwith the proposed establishment of skill development centre. The AICCI, which was established in 1982 under Tamil Nadu Societies Registration Act 1975, has over 600 members dealing in various fields of export, import, industries and manufacturing sector, he said.
