Use MNREGA funds to create permanent assets, says MP

R. Dhruvanarayan, MP from Chamarajanagar, on Tuesday directed officials to create permanent assets by tapping funds released for various schemes under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act.

Interacting with officials of the Mysuru Zilla Panchayat here, Mr. Dhruvanarayan said there was no dearth of funds for MNREGA and each gram panchayat could create permanent assets by taking up construction of school compounds, creating playgrounds, etc. at a cost of Rs. 2 crore.

The MP, whose constituency partly falls into Mysuru district, instructed the officials to chalk out a programme in consultation with taluk officials.

Officials confident

It was revealed at the meeting that the government had approved construction of 3,458 houses for the Jenu Kuruba tribals in H.D. Kote, Periyapatana, Hunsur and Nanjangud between 2009-10 and 2014-15; as of now, 2,678 of them have been completed. Nearly Rs. 80 crore has been released as grant during the current financial year and officials expressed confidence of completing the remaining houses. Mr. Dhruvanarayan also instructed officials to show him the physical progress of the works within two months.

Two 30-bed mother-child health hospitals have been constructed at Nanjangud and K.R. Nagar, he added. Meanwhile, Deputy Conservator of Forests Karikalan said there are plans to revive and beautify Lingambudhi lake, complete with landscaping and boating facilities, at a cost of Rs.1.74 crore.
