With no clarity on government quota seats in private medical colleges, the State government has extended the last date for professional course aspirants to enter options for seats under the Common Entrance Test (CET) pool. The new deadline is yet to be announced.
The last date was Wednesday as published by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA). The extension comes as a relief to medical seat aspirants as the medical and dental seat matrix are yet to be uploaded by the KEA. Medical Education Minister Sharan Prakash Patil said, “We are hoping to convince private medical colleges to give government quota seats to the CET pool soon so that the seat matrix can be uploaded.”
The extension is likely to have a cascading effect on the entire admission schedule, including publication of mock results and provision to change the option entry. This year has not been easy for students, particularly those vying for medical and dental seats. Many medical aspirants had decided to enter options for engineering seats fearing the impasse over medical seats is unlikely to end quickly.
Managements of private medical and dental colleges had refused to offer 700 seats for the government quota. As a result, the State government is expected to agree to a 30 per cent fee hike for government-quota seats under the CET pool as well as the COMEDK quota, which will be filled via NEET rankings.
A meeting between the government and colleges is scheduled on Wednesday.
MCI to extend
admission deadline
Officials are expecting the Medical Council of India to extend the last date to complete admissions. As per a SC order, counselling for UG medical and dental courses must be completed by September 30. However, most States are behind schedule due to introduction of NEET.
