Yelahanka power plant may ease city's woes in 2 yrs
Bengaluru: Power-starved Bengaluru can look forward to brighter days in the years to come. The gas-based power plant proposed in Yelahanka inched closer to reality with chief minister Siddaramaiah laying the foundation stone for the project on Tuesday. It is expected to add 370 MW of power to the grid in two years.
Bengaluru's power shortage runs up to 600 MW per day in summer.
Karnataka Power Corporation Limited (KPCL) is setting up the gas-based plant on a 120-acre plot, where a defunct diesel power plant stands at present. It has been non-functional since 2013 due to environmental issues. The Rs 1,571-crore plant will start power generation in May 2018. Gas Authority of India Limited (GAIL) will supply natural gas to the plant from its terminal point near Kuvempu Circle on Outer Ring Road.
Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) claims to have completed 10% of the work. It will install one of the largest turbines at the plant to meet the peak-hour demands.
"The Pavagada solar project was in limbo for several years due to land hurdles, but we have given farmers the option of leasing land for 30 years at Rs 12,000 per acre per year. The model surprised Prime Minister Narendra Modi too," said energy minister DK Shivakumar.
