Gladbach open to club-record deal for Chelsea's Andreas Christensen

Borussia Monchengladbach are prepared to make Chelsea defender Andreas Christensen their record signing.

Christensen, 20, spent last season at Monchengladbach, having joined on a two-year loan deal from the Blues last summer.

The Denmark international impressed during his first Bundesliga campaign, making 31 league appearances while also playing in the Champions League.

The Bundesliga side, who finished fourth last season, have also previously indicated that they hope to sign Christensen on a permanent deal.

And speaking to Sport Bild, sporting director Max Eberl has now said they are prepared to break the club's transfer record fee of €15 million, paid for Bayer Leverkusen's Christoph Kramer earlier this summer, to secure Christensen's services.

"We only spend the money we have. But in the case of Christensen we are of course willing to make him a record transfer," Eberl said. "We know for sure that a player with his qualities won't be cheap."

Reports have suggested Gladbach will have to pay at least €20m to land the defender, but Eberl said "the circulating transfer fee is false," and added that "a set sum does not exist yet."

Christensen, meanwhile, has remained diplomatic about a deal, telling Sport Bild: "I feel really well at Gladbach, but the same applies to Chelsea."
