Faisalabad, Quetta, Islamabad win in 5-a-side hockey

LAHORE-Faisalabad Falcon, Quetta Warriors and Islamabad Fighters registered victories in the OGDCL-PHF 5-a-side Hockey Championship here on Sunday night at the National Hockey Stadium under floodlights on.

In the first match of the night, Faisalabad Falcon defeated Karachi Sharks 5-3. The first half between Faisalabad and Karachi was evenly contested as both the sides raided each other area with lively moves but failed to score. It was Faisalabad which shot into lead through Tazeemul Hasan.

The second period saw faster pace with both sides creating more scoring sitters. Mohsin Sabir made it 2-0 for Faisalabad but Karachi fought back gallantly and equalized the score at 2-2 through Sikander and Zeeshan. However, before the hooter sounded for the end of the second period, Faislabad's captain Dilber again restored 2-1 lead.  Karachi went all-out to hunt the equalizer and succeeded in making it 3-3 through Hasan. At this crucial time, Adnan put Faisalabad ahead again with a superb reverse hit and their captain Dilber superbly converted a goal to finish the match at 5-3.

In the second match, Quetta Warriors thumped Peshawar Panthers 9-5. Rizwan Junior hit a smashing goal to provide Quetta 1-0 lead which was doubled by Kashif Javed. Peshawar then responded through Adeel Latif to make it 2-1 but Quetta’s Hasan Ali Faraz's long range effort made it 3-1. Adeel Latif once again reduced the margin to 3-2. Rizwan then converted a fabulous goal to make it 4-2. Quetta's Rizwan completed his hat-trick and strengthened his team’s lead to 5-2. Khairullah reduced the lead to 5-3 for Peshawar. In a spell of three minutes, Quetta dominated and scored three goals through Asfanyar, captain Kashif Ali and Rizwan to take unassailable 8-3 lead. In the third and last period, both the teams played well and scored goals one after another and the match ended at 9-5 in favour of Quetta.

In the third and last match of the night, Islamabad Fighters beat Lahore Lions 7-6 in a thriller. Islamabad were well in control most of the time and built 3-0 lead with goals coming from Ejaz, Rashid and Wasim Akram. Lahore were missing the services of their captain Ammad Butt who was out due to injury. Wasim made it 4-0 for Islamabad. Lahore broke the deadlock when Rana Sohail scored hammered a thwarting goal to make it 4-1. The contest came to life through a Bilal Mahmood brace as first he scored off a 1 vs 1 challenge with a well-placed flat push and then made it 4-3 through a reverse hit.

Islamabad bounced back in style and scored through Wasim Akram who shot well to make it 5-3. Lahore reduced the margin to bare minimum and Islamabad doubling the lead. It continued and when the match finally ended, it was 7-6 for Islamabad. Man-of-match Rana Sohail scored a hat-trick for Lahore.
