Chennai: What happens when there is a comedy show, but no rehearsal or script? A quirky, fun interactive session that is bound to leave the audiences in stitches. To show how it is done best, Bengaluru-based improvisational comedy group The Improv will be performing in the city on June 24.
The event presented by Theatrix in association with The Times of India promises to be the group's biggest, funniest and maddest show at Sir Mutha Venkata Subba Rao Concert Hall.
Popularly known as Bengaluru's best comedy experience, The Improv uses five actors, a host and audience response to script their on-the-spot performances.
The group amalgamates acting, spontaneity and banter. The host has some questions for the audiences who in turn provide them with situations that are performed on stage by the quick-witted actors. "We know that Chennai likes to be surprised and as we thrive on unpredictability and curiosity there will be lots of excitement and craziness," said filmmaker Saad Khan, host of the show.
The questions Khan will pose are more like banter that are cue for putting up a comic act. Situations could be as simple as an argument between a traffic policeman and a drunk driver or as complicated as a couple falling in love on the moon. "I may be asking what was the most awkward experience that may lead on to something funny that we can act out on stage," said Khan. Though the shows are mostly impromptu, the group plans to have some city-specific questions on its love for cinema, especially Rajinikanth.
The show that usually has five rounds will have a special addition, where they will invite a member of the audience to join the act.
The group which popularised the idea of improvisational comedy in the country had its first show in May 2012, and has since then performed 100 shows across the country. It was also the only team from India to be selected for the Sweden International Improv Festival. The city show will have its usual host of actors including RJ Danish Sait, actor and stand-up comedian Sumukhi Suresh and British voice-over artist Sal Yusuf. Praveen Raj, with his expertise of four south-Indian languages, will add to the local flavour.
