Delhi zoo goes for a revamp

The National Zoological Park here, which attracts around 22 lakh visitors annually, is all set for a revamp.

“We are planning to build an aquarium, butterfly park, food court and visitors’ centre as part of the Master Plan 2031. All the progressive measures will be completed by 2031 and the work has begun,” Riyaz Khan, zoo curator said.

The official said many exotic trees will be planted to attract migratory birds. “We have around 31 species of mammals, birds and reptiles. With the exotic trees, we expect more bird species to reach here, especially during the migratory season,” he said.

Khan said the zoo has also decided against cutting down dead trees to make way for nesting.

“The whole idea behind the revamp is to give the place a forest-like atmosphere. All the concrete structures and cages will be covered with trees and other plantation so that the animals don’t feel they are in a cage.

“The Centre has promised to provide us Quick Response Teams, additional sign boards and private security guards,” he said. —PTI
