Investigation into a lone case of stealing gold ornaments in the guise of polishing them reported in Amberpet three weeks ago helped East Zone police of Hyderabad recover 1.08 kg gold ornaments worth Rs. 30 lakh.
A special team probing into the ‘theft by attention diversion’ stitched up the leads by analysing similar offences in different parts of the city. Based on the leads, they went to Bihar and picked up five suspects. The gang eventually admitted to interrogators that they were responsible Amberpet theft and relieved many of their ornaments in similar fashion.
Following their confession, the police recovered gold ornaments weighing 1.08 kg which were stolen by the accused. While Ranjeeth Sah, Kaneya Prasad, Sunil Kumar Sah, Bambam Sah and Ajay Mandal were arrested, their associate Mukesh Kumar was still at large, East zone DCP V. Ravinder said at a press conference.
All the accused were from Bihar State but took shelter in rented houses in Poosalabasthi of Mangalhat. They would go around residential localities and approach women posing as ornament polishers. To win confidence of unsuspecting women, they would polish silver articles or copper vessels using chemical powder available in market.
“Without revealing about the powder they purchased from market and used for polishing, the gang leads women to believe they have some discreet technique,” the DCP said. The gang asks the women to keep gold ornaments in a bowl of water and heat them.
Then they ask the women to bring some water or turmeric powder and take out the jewellery and leave the premises asking the jewellery owners to open the bowl after some time. The arrested gang admitted to have committed 25 thefts in this manner in Telangana and Maharashtra States in past two years.
