Congress MLA Sunil Jakhar on Monday began an indefinite protest in Abohar’s Canal Colony over water shortage in the area and the lack of action on the government’s part.

Jakhar reminded them of the 1970 census, in which “majority of people of Abohar and Fazilka decided to stay with Punjab instead of Haryana”.

“But now government has been stepmotherly with the people of the area”, he added.

“There is water shortage in Abohar because canals are running dry. The groundwater in these areas are unfit for any purpose and, hence, farmers are dependent on canal water alone.” He alleged that the CM was interested in only his constituency.

He also pointed out that during the monsoon season, the drain water also diverts towards Abohar- Fazilka, which has also been facing problem of water logging. In drought-like situations, the chief minister grab their water share just to protect his own constituency,” he added.

He gave the example of the CM’s sangat darshan in Balluana. “There farmers complained of poor maintenance of canals but the chief minister did not provide solution for the problems.”

When The Indian Express contacted R K Gupta, executive engineer of canal department, he said, “There is a lot of water hyacinth at Mallanwala head from where Sirhind feeder starts due to which there is water shortage in some parts, we are sorry for that. The water supply will be restored soon.”
