Let's find who exactly benefits from piracy; Rajeev Ravi
Piracy issues have been plaguing Mollywood for quite a while and after Premam and Leela, Dulquer Salmaan-starrer Kali and Kammattipaadam are the latest films to have found their way online illegally.
Rajeev Ravi's Kammattipaadam, which is still running in theatres, recently got uploaded on the social networking page that had also released a copy of Sameer Thahir's Kali. The download link of the former film was shared hundreds of times before it was removed.
The production team of Kammattipaadam is leaving no stone unturned to nab the culprits. 'The page admin had uploaded a theatre print of the film, with a caption saying download it asap before it gets taken down. We have filed a case with the Cyber Cell, and reported it to the social networking site, which has taken it down. There are countries like Australia where the film is yet to be released,' said a source from the production team.
The team is also sending the print to the forensic department, to investigate which theatre it was recorded from. 'Stringent action will be taken against the admin of the page,' added the source.
However, Rajeev Ravi says he has had it with the consecutive piracy issues with every other film of his. 'Every time a film is leaked, people raise a hue and cry about it but nothing really changes. Every time the culprit turns out to be some ordinary youngster from a village. If you go against him legally, he will have to sell his house and more. And invariably, you end up compromising outside the court.'
Piracy is a deeper issue, and arresting that guy is not the solution to the problem, he says. 'We have to collectively find out who exactly benefits from piracy. Do these youngsters do it just for fun, or do they do it on the instructions of someone else, possibly people from inside the industry to deliberately cut down the business? Are they getting some kind of revenue from it? We have to identify the agenda behind it.'
Meanwhile, ironically, Udta Punjab, for which Rajeev Ravi has done the cinematography, was also leaked online prior to its release.
