World Music Day was conceptualised by French Minister of Culture, Jack Lang, as a day dedicated to the promotion of all kinds of music. A one of its kind festival - Fete de la Musique - took place for the first time in 1982 and since then June 21 is being celebrated across the world, every year. This day many musicians perform for free in parks, cafes and even train stations to promote peace through their music.

This World Music Day, Music Today, through its video blogs, brings together 7 celebrated musicians to share their rich knowledge on Riyaz (Music Practice) and to tell you how to excel in the field of music.

Veterans like Shafqat Amanat Ali, Shaan, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Dr L Subramaniam, Jasbir Jassi, Mame Khan and Pete Lockett tells you why Riyaz is important and shares some hacks to better your Riyaz.

What is Riyaz and why it is a must:

Be it a vocalist or instrumentalist, sound engineer or performer, practice is a must to sharpen their skills. Practicing music is called Riyaz. Regular practice helps in keeping the voice in tune, hitting the notes right and modulating it properly.

Morning Riyaz:

Mornings are the perfect time for Riyaz. If enthusiasts practice the basic notes every morning, they will have a strong musical foundation.

Riyaz on Standing Notes:

Staying on a single note in one breath and prolonged humming can strengthen tonal quality. Practicing the low notes help in building flexibility of voice in all the scales.

Riyaz Techniques:

Singing along a particular tune helps to enhance texture, quality & modulation of voice. To rejuvenate your mind and keep it calm practice chanting "Om". Practicing paltas (musical notes) steadily improves the quality of voice.

Practicing with instruments bring out a musical stability in one's voice. Nothing like learning from veterans; listening to prominent singers is a musical exercise in itself.

Need of a mentor:

A mentor helps to identify your strengths and weaknesses and to assess strategies to get you closer to your goals. Mentors can provide honest and constructive feedback to help you develop self-awareness, and inspire you to reach beyond overcoming the limitations.
