MUMBAI: A chit fund operator is absconding after allegedly cheating seven women of over Rs 16 lakhs in Nalasopara.
Viju Tambe alias Swati Kasare (32) who operates the chit fund is on the run. The matter came to light when a victim, Shilpa Devlekar (34) approached the Tuling police. The complainant stated that in December 2014 she invested Rs 2.35 lakhs with Kasare who promised to double the money in a year.
When Devlekar approached Kasare for the money in May she realised that she had been cheated. Kasare has been absconding. Police went to her Mukund Niwas home in Nalasopara (east) but did not find her.
The police has filed a case of cheating against Kasare. Following Devlekar's complaint, six other women who invested lakhs with Kasare have approached the police. So far the cheating amount runs into Rs 16 lakhs. The women have told the police that Kasare managed to con them by talking sweet with them.
Police said that more women may have been cheated. Kasare used to take nothing less than a lakh. She would take the cash and issue them chits on plain paper.
