Veloor to be fully digitised

Vidya Academy NSS unit to make digital data of 8,500 households

THRISSUR: As a part of the state government’s project of Local Empowerment through Digitization (LED), the NSS unit of Vidya Academy of Science & Technology, Thalakkottukara, has embarked on a pilot project, first of its kind in the state, to digitise a local body entirely.

As a part of the project, a Geographical Information System (GIS) Map would be created with a digital data bank of 8,500-odd houses in Veloor panchayat near the college. With a click of the mouse, the details of all the members of the house including their educational qualification and welfare schemes they are a part of would be made available.

The topography of the local body including the water bodies, roads and major trees will also part of the GIS. “The project implemented in association with the Kerala NSS Technical Cell, a member each from all the households will be given training in obtaining birth, marriage and death certificates easily from the ‘LSG Kerala’ website and 24 others like caste, income and possession certificates from ‘e-district’ website by creating a particular app,” NSS programme officer Aswathy B. said.

M. Abdul Rahiman, the pro-vice chancellor of Kerala Technological University who is closely monitoring the project said that the information technology needed to reach the grassroots levels for making digital revolution a reality in the country.
“The GIS maps would be of tremendous help to the local bodies in implementing developmental and welfare projects,” he noted. With a total of 400 volunteers of the academy involved in it, the pilot project is expected to be completed by the month of July.
