MUMBAI: The MMRDA is examining the possibility of extending the Metro 2 network from Dahisar to Bhayander via Mira Road. Additional metropolitan commissioner Pravin Darade, tasked with overseeing Metro projects, made the announcement. Darade inspected the alignments of the 23.5km DN Nagar-Mankhurd Metro 2B and the 33km Wadala-Ghatkopar-Thane-Kasarvadavali Metro 4 corridors during the weekend.
Darade was accompanied by Metro director P R K Murthy and other senior MMRDA officials.
Residents of Mira Road and Bhayander have demanded that the Metro project should be extended from Dahisar to the far-flung suburbs. Currently, commuters find it difficult to board overcrowded trains from Mira Road and Bhayander stations. They say Metro connectivity can ease woes. During his inspection, Darade visited Mandale (near Mankhurd in eastern suburbs) and Owale at Kasarvadavli (Thane) to understand the issues related to car and depot sites, land acquisition and resettlement and rehabilitation issues. “We are examining the possibility of extending Metro connectivity to Mira Road and Bhayander,” Darade said. “The estimated completion cost of Metro 2B corridor is Rs 10,986 crore and the approximate completion cost of the Metro 4 corridor is Rs14,549 crore,” he added.
On June 16, Darade had visited the alignments of the Metro 2 (Dahisar-DN Nagar link) and Dahisar east and Andheri east Metro 7 corridors. “The inspections are imperative as the MMRDA is keen to begin implementation of the Metro corridors as soon as possible. The city urgently requires Metro connectivity to decongest the suburban rail network and also to provide comfortable and safe journey,” Darade said.
Darade is known for his contribution to the Metro projects (two elevated routes covering 38km) in Nagpur, an official said. “His visit is considered crucial as the MMRDA is committed to construct the Metro network as soon as possible,” a MMRDA official added. Chief minister Devendra Fadnavis is keenly tracking the development of the city’s Metro corridors.
