New Delhi: Identifying the potential of the National Capital Region (NCR) for greater economic activities, a recent report by the NCR Planning Board has estimated that 61 new industrial and infrastructure projects can generate 36,600 direct and another 4.25 lakh indirect jobs.
The report titled "Functional Plan for Economic Development in NCR" released last week has suggested location- specific projects such as food processing, auto components, leather, textile, IT/ ITES and gems and jewellery.
It has been approved by the statutory planning committee of the Board, which has representatives from the member-states of NCR. The indicative investment in these projects is estimated around Rs 4,632 crore.
The industrial and infrastructure projects have been suggested based on the local conditions and the best suited options. For example, the report suggests setting up of a design city centre in Delhi for textile and hard goods, improved logistic facilities in Okhla and Naraina. It has recommended that hi-tech industries, with special emphasis on high value-added products/ services such as small scale industries, BPOs and IT/ ITeS be established in Delhi.
For Haryana sub-region, the projects include agriculture and food testing research centre at Rai, modernisation of dyeing houses in Panipat and footware design and development institute in Rohtak.
The report has proposed cricket bat innovation and research centre for Meerut and infrastructure for vegetable pack houses at Hapur.
The plan has been prepared keeping in mind to boost growth in districts that have so far been lagging behind. The report mentions that while Haryana sub-region has been growing at the fastest rate in the NCR, growth rate of Uttar Pardesh and Rajasthan sub-regions has been less than that of the region.
