Mumbai: A two-year-old Nalasopara girl allegedly died of a medicine overdose on Sunday. Her father who is suspected of having administered her the cough syrup has been detained.
According to the Tuling Police, the girl was lying motionless in her house in Shirdi Nagar, Nalasopara (east). Her father Vikas Netke, who was drunk, was sitting next to her. Neighbours along with the police took the girl to the hospital where she was declared brought dead.
While neighbours told the police that Netke had beaten his daughter leading to her death, the accused has told the police that he had given her a cough syrup on Sunday afternoon.
By 3 pm he tried to wake her up but in vain. His screams alerted the neighbours who informed the police.
Neighbours have told the police that Netke, who is unemployed, used to beat his daughter and four-year-old son after he came home drunk. His wife works as a housemaid and was away on Sunday.
The body has been sent for autopsy. Police said that there was no injury mark on the girl's body. Police have seized the syrup bottle too. A case of accidental death has been registered.
The police said that a murder case will be registered if the autopsy report suggests that the child was hit. Police will record the statement of his son who was the witness.
