On Saturday, around 150 from Pipariya, a woman believed to be the baby-snatcher walked into Bhopal’s Hamidia Hospital with a child in her arms. She picked out 14-year-old Huma Kausar from a crowd of people waiting at the hospital counter and asked her to hold the child until she returned.

“The woman put the baby in my daughter Huma’s lap and promised to return within a few minutes. When she didn’t return for nearly an hour, I informed the hospital staff, who reported it to Kohefiza police,” Huma’s father, Bagmunshi Hussain Khan, said.

Kohefiza police rushed to the hospital and searched in vain for the unidentified woman.

“Though we couldn’t find the woman, we did find a bag containing the baby’s clothes and a letter purportedly written by the woman who abandoned the baby in Huma’s lap,” said assistant sub-inspector Ram Karan Singh.

In the letter, the woman claimed to be a mother of three daughters and expressed regret for taking away the newborn just to fulfil her desire to have a boy child. She went on to apologise to god for her sin.

The letter also gave police details of the child’s real parents, following they got in touch with Pipariya police.

“We were stunned to know that the contents of letter found at the hospital were true, as the child’s real parents had lodged a case of their newborn child’s kidnapping with Pipariya police a fortnight ago,” the assistant sub-inspector said.

The child was reunited with his parents later on Saturday night.
