Palanpur: Two undertrial prisoners escaped from sub-jail in Deodar town of Banaskantha on Saturday after removing the iron bars and grills of the cell in which they were lodged. However, one of them was caught near Golvi village, some 15km from Deodar later on Saturday. Two policemen who were on duty at the prison have been booked for negligence of duty and a departmental inquiry has been initiated against them.
Prabhubhai Mali and Bhupatji Thakor were behind bars in connection with a theft case and for jumping bail, respectively.
Thakor was nabbed later on Saturday, while Mali is still on the run.
Sub-jail incharge Urgji Thakor said that on Saturday he had to rush to the sub-jail after he was informed that two undertrial prisoners had escaped.
"The accused had escaped after removing the iron bars and breaking the grills. They jumped the compound wall to escape," said Thakor.
The jailer has lodged a complaint against head constable Lalitbhai Dhudaji and constable Dilipsinh Manubha of Deodar police for dereliction of duty.
"We have sounded an alert in the district and cordoned the area to nab Mali who is still on the run," said police sub-inspector O P Sisodiya.
