Farmers from different villages laid siege to the taluk office in Srirangapatna on Saturday demanding compensation for crop loss due to the modernisation of three major waterways.

Pandavapura Sahakari Sakkare Karkhane (PSSK) chairman K.S. Nanjunde Gowda led the protest.

The Irrigation Department had stopped releasing Cauvery water to Chikka Devaraya Sagar, Virija and Devaraya canals owing to the ongoing modernisation works. Thus, standing sugarcane crop on hundreds of acres has withered, Mr. Gowda said. The protesters raised slogans against the State government and elected representatives – Housing Minister and district in-charge M.H. Ambareesh and C.S. Puttaraju, MP – for not taking measures to solve their problems.

Apart from compensation, they also demanded free seeds and fertilizers from the government. Later, they submitted a memorandum to the government through the taluk office.
