Scientific Advisor to Defence Minister G. Satheesh Reddy called upon the armed forces institutions and academia to have a hard look at the cyberspace for learning more, how to operate, how to be careful and about the emerging technology.
“Many countries have already put in place a Cyberspace Command,” he pointed out. Delivering the 89{+t}{+h}convocation address at the Military College of Electronics and Mechanical Engineering (MCEME) here on Saturday, he said that it was imperative for the armed forces institutions and universities to focus on the emerging scientific scenarios which were rapidly changing.
The country needs to develop institutions and the skill sets required to provide the armed forces with the latest technologies, he maintained.
Space was no longer in the civilian domain as it had become very important for the defence with many countries launching series of satellites for surveillance, imaging, varieties of payloads, etc., he observed.
The scientific scenario was changing fast and the country needed to be up to date on the knowledge everyday. The Army had to keep pace with the current technology, he said.
Stating that defence technology was always in the forefront of popular technology advancements like the satellite navigation and the internet, he said most systems were changing to “unmanned” to “search and shoot” with dizzying expansion of computational powers, high speeds, sensors, and so on.
Material technology too was changing rapidly with composite materials adding to more strength, self-healing, withstand high temperatures and the likes, he said. Mr. Reddy, also Director of Research Centre Imarat (RCI), gave away engineering degrees to 43 cadets who had completed the 25{+t}{+h}technical entry scheme course.
He also gave away the GOC-in-C ARTRAC Trophy and the DGEME gold medal for the best all-round-cadet to Lt. Vishal Rana. The Commandant’s silver medals were bagged by Lt. Tarun Kumar and Lt. Sandeep Gupta.
The Best project award was for the ‘Hexapod research platform programming and control’ by the team of Lt. Vinayak Choubey, Lt. Nilay Biswas, Lt. Varun Gupta and Lt. Shivansh Kaushik. MCEME Commandant Lt. Gen. Gurmukh Singh delivered the inaugural address.
