Ahmadabad: Quota seats find few takers in degree engineering courses

According to ACPC data, 2,136 applications have been received from SC students against 5,028 seats (or seven per cent of the total available seats71,829) reserved for them, 1,993 applications are from ST students against 10,774 seats(15 per cent of the total seats) reserved for them, 12,423 applications made by socially and economically backward classes (SEBC) against 19,393 (27 per cent of the total) reserved for them and only 6,919 applications received from EBC of the non-reserved categories against 7,182 (10 per cent of the total) seats reserved for them and only 319 application received from ex-servicemen children against 718 seats (one per cent) reserved for them.

ACPC figures say that the number of applicants seeking admissions in engineering courses even from open category that include upper-castes of all communities is only 23,151 against 28,743 seats meant for open category students.

Speaking to The Sunday Express, ACPC member-secretary G P Vadodaria said that the number of unfilled reserved category seats would be merged with the open category.

He said that lesser number of applicants from reserved categories, particularly from SCs and STs, was a matter of concern and it was the time for activists and social workers to motivate the backward communities to go for science education and professional courses. Stating that only a total of 46,941applications have been received from reserved and general category students against a total of 71,829 seats available in the state, he said that about 25,000 engineering seats would remain vacant.
