Calangute: Candolim has been experiencing frequent, day-long power failures since the beginning of this month, mainly due to branches falling on electricity cables and poles. The latest incident occurred on Friday, when parts of Candolim went without power for the entire day after a tree crashed on electricity cables at Orda.
In the first week of June, during pre-monsoon trimming of trees, on more that one instance, some trees crashed on electricity cables and poles while they were being hacked, leading to power failure.
There were power cuts for a few days following those incidents as several electricity poles and cables, along a stretch, were replaced with new ones. The electricity department took the decision of replacing the entire stretch because the new poles were higher than the older ones.
Electricity department sources said, the only solution to the problem of electricity being disrupted due to branches falling on cables is underground power cabling, as it is difficult to identify all trees that could come crashing down. Parts of Calangute are already being supplied power through underground cables.
