Controversy mires Shia College new campus opening
Lucknow: The governor will not inaugurate the new campus of Shia College of Law, Sitapur Road, on Monday as was decided earlier.
"A letter was received from governor house stating that due to unavoidable reasons, Governor Ram Naik would not be able to attend the inauguration ceremony," said Shia College principal Musaiyab Naqvi. This comes after a letter was written by a member of the board of trustees at Shia College to Governor Ram Naik.
in the letter, Hidayet Husain requested Naik not to inaugurate the new campus on June 20 as it had come up in an illegal manner. The college management will go ahead with the inauguration on Monday.
According to the letter (a copy of which is with TOI), the new campus has been constructed without permission of the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). Since the campus falls within 100 meters of a national protected monument (Karbala of King Naseeruddin Haider), it is not legal.
"The allegations are baseless, there is no new construction at Shia College of Law, and since Bar Council had stated there should be a separate campus for law studies we, combined two blocks of the old campus as new law campus, hence it is not a new building," said board member Maulana Yasoob Abbas.
ASI chief superintendent archaeologist Navratan Kumar Pathak said whether construction is legal or not can be found only after physical verification.
