Murals to dot Nabanna VVIP corridors

Howrah: Cabinet changes and bureaucratic reshuffles at Nabanna apart, the state secretariat will also don a new look as murals showcasing Bengal and its culture will soon be seen hanging from the walls along the VVIP corridors. Apart from national and international VVIPs, chief minister Mamata Banerjee also uses these entry and exit corridors to and from Nabanna.
Wall space on either sides of both corridors adds up to some 3,000 square feet.
"Many VVIPs from Delhi, other states and abroad visit Nabanna regularly. The chief minister believes that West Bengal and its culture should be showcased to such visitors through art and music. Her idea is to give them a glimpse of Bengal, its heritage and culture along with important land marks of the state," said Saikat Chowdhury, Howrah Municipal Corporation (HMC) borough VI chairman, who is also in charge of the Nabanna development zone.
Chowdhury added, "In tune with the CM's wishes, we have appointed accomplished artist Jitendra Singh to prepare 50 murals that depict the state's culture. There will be murals with the Biswa Bangla replica showcasing Bengal's heritage as well as ones highlighting key festivals like Durga Puja. Besides, murals on important land marks in the state like Belur Math, the Dakshineswar temple, Shahid Minar, Victoria Memorial, Howrah bridge, Haldia Port, tea gardens of north Bengal and Jangalmahal are also being made. This apart, the walls will also have paintings depicting stalwarts of the Bengal renaissance."
The state government has allocated Rs 1 crore as initial cost of the project. The murals are being made of cement, fibre glass and terracota. Murals apart, Rabindra Sangeet and folk music tunes will be played in these corridors, each of which will have a fountain. The project planners have also asked the artist to plan a statue with a "save the environment" message. This statue is likely to be installed near Nabanna.
Some of the wall space, including the boundary of the Mandirtala outpost, already have murals. H
HMC sources said early next month, mayor Rathin Chakraborty may request the CM to inaugurate the project.
