A man arrested on suspicion of drink-driving is in a serious condition in hospital after becoming ill in custody.

Police believe the suspect may have been attacked by another driver on the A5 near Caddington in Bedfordshire before he was arrested on Thursday.

He was initially taken to hospital and discharged before being arrested. But, he is now back in hospital.

"He may have been assaulted prior to the arrival of emergency services," police said.

"I'm appealing for anyone who may have witnessed an altercation between two drivers on the A5 southbound, just prior to the traffic lights at the Dunstable Road junction, to get in touch," Det Insp Iain Morgan said.

"The man is currently in a serious condition in hospital so it's vital that anyone with information contacts us, so that we can help piece together what led to his injuries."

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has been informed.
