Bernie Ecclestone is open to the possibility of Imola replacing Monza on the calendar next year.

Monza's future has been in doubt for over a year as the circuit organisers have failed to reach an agreement with Ecclestone beyond 2016. Ecclestone says Imola is a viable alternative if the Automobile Club d'Italia agrees to the switch.

"We need to rely little bit on the national sporting authorities in the country to support, so if it doesn't happen in Monza and they want to support it in Imola, then we'll be in Imola."

Asked if Imola was ready to host a race, Ecclestone added: "Well they're doing a lot of work, so yes I think so."

The circuit last held a grand prix in 2006, but extensive work has been carried out since. The only time Monza has not held the Italian Grand Prix was 1980 when the circuit underwent a major upgrade.
