Externed criminal roams Govandi streets, cops don’t have a clue
A history-sheeter and externed criminal with more than 18 cases registered against him roams free on the streets of Govandi, right under the nose of Trombay police. Interestingly, cops say they have no clue of his presence in the area despite the fact that local have tried to inform them many times.

“It is strange that a man of such records has been let to roam around freely like this. He follows his wife [Khairunnisa Hussain - a Govandi corporator] where ever she goes. It is no secret that he stays at his own house in Cheeta camp. Police inaction on this is suspect,” said Reshma Nevrekar, another corporator of the area.

Other sources too have confirmed this, saying that he can be found carrying out his business from the M/East BMC ward in Govandi.

“He should not be here. We are taking all steps to ensure that he is kept out of the area. We will try to locate him as soon as possible,” said zonal Deputy Commissioner of Police Shahaji Umap, when informed about Batla.

Forty five year-old Akbar Hussain, alias Raju Batla, a history-sheeter is wanted in numerous cases but his speciality lies in stealing cars. A frequent name in interstate car theft rackets, he still has the ‘wanted’ tag in a few. In 2013, he was even arrested by the Karnataka police in a credit card cloning scam.

But in spite of his many antecedents, which includes cases of murder, theft, fake currency racket, and more, his shot to fame was when he was arrested in connection with a conspiracy to assassinate former union home minister LK Advani.

He was last arrested in January 2016, after an advocate of the Bombay High Court found his stolen vehicle parked outside the court complex bearing the same registration plate; only now it was driven by Batla.

Batla and his wife had only in October 2015 joined the Congress in the presence of the Mumbai Regional Congress Committee president Sanjay Nirupam.

He has more than 17 cases pending against him with the Mumbai and Navi Mumbai police.
