A High Court judge in Labasa says it appears there are people who do not pay heed to court warnings about defilement.

Justice Sunil Sharma made the remarks when he jailed Ilimo Tulevu for two years one month with a non parole period of one year six months for defilement.

“It is the duty of the court to hand down a sentence which acts as a deterrent to the would-be perpetrators,” he said.

In August 2015, Tulevu, 38, then, had met a girl, 15, and later had sexual intercourse with her.

“Having sexual intercourse with a girl of 15 years by a man who is more than twice her age is a sad indictment on the society,” Justice Sharma said.

“The offence of defilement has been enacted to protect young girls like the accused.

“The accused has not shown any respect to a person who was just venturing to better things in life but for his personal lust.”
