Berhampur: A pall of gloom descended on Digapur in Ganjam district as the body of Hare Krushna Nayak, who had died in Oman under mysterious circumstances, reached the village on Friday. The 29-year-old was working as a plumber in the Arab country.
The body was brought to Visakhapatnam in Andhra Pradesh on Thursday and then taken to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here for postmortem as the villagers demanded to know the exact cause of the death.

According to the medical report, Nayak died on June 1. The company for which he was working, however, informed the family on June 7 that he was suffering from brain tumour and had died the previous day.
Since his family members were not in a position to go to Oman, they approached the district administration for help to bring the body back to India. "We had doubts over the exact cause of his death and therefore demanded an autopsy," said Santosh Behera, brother-in-law of the deceased.
Another worker, engaged in the same company, had informed the family about Nayak sustaining head injuries after falling from a building under construction, he said.
Nayak is the sole breadwinner of the family. His father is bedridden due to paralysis. Nayak left for Oman on February 28. He was blessed with a son on June 6, family sources said.
"The family was provided financial assistance under Harischandra Sahayata for conducting the last rites of Nayak," said tehsildar (Kinishi) Lalatendu Sahu.
District labour officer (Berhampur) Kalpana Mishra said she had conducted an inquiry into matter. "I will send the report to the state labour commission. Since the incident took place in a foreign land, the labour department cannot provide any compensation to the family," she said.
