University of Hyderabad revokes professors' suspension

The two professors, who were arrested in March this year along with 25 other students, were served suspension orders on Monday.

Hyderabad: The University of Hyderabad on Friday revoked the suspension of Dr K.Y. Ratnam of the department of political science and Dr Tathagata Sengupta of the School of Mathematics and Statistics.

The two professors, who were arrested in March this year along with 25 other students, were served suspension orders on Monday. The university cited Central government to say that government servant who is detained in police custody for more than 48 hours is deemed suspended.

Following this, the two professors began a hunger strike. On Friday, they protested at the administration building along with other teachers. Vice-chancellor Prof. Appa Rao Podile after listening to the teachers formed a review committee to which the two professors explained their position.

The committee late in the evening recommended that the suspension be revoked based on which the university passed orders.

The two professors ended their hunger strike but said no decision had been taken as to whether the tent outside the UoH main gate would be removed or would be used as a venue for teachers to continue their protest on the Rohith Vemula suicide.
