A suspected case of polio has been detected in Balrampur district in Uttar Pradesh.

According to district hospital superintendent S.I. Zaidi, the 6-year-old child has been admitted to the hospital and doctors suspect it could be a case of polio. “However, further checkups are being carried out to confirm whether it is actually polio,” the doctor said.

Uttar Pradesh health minister S.P. Yadav said the matter has been taken seriously and a team of doctors have been asked to verify the same.

The Balrampur case comes just days after a VPDV type 2 was detected in a sewage sample collected from a site in Hyderabad in Telangana

The Union health ministry has maintained that it probes thousands of such cases every year and none of them have been found to be polio and the child in this particular case has been tested and kept under observation.

The Union health ministry said that no case of the crippling disease had been reported in the country since 2011.

According to agency reports, the World Health Organisation (WHO) India country office, when asked about the suspected polio case in Balrampur , denied that there ws any such case.

The WHO claimed that the child was paralysed and not polio-afflicted as is being reported in a section of the media.

Test reports have been sent to the laboratory and will take two to three weeks for the results.

However as per preliminary investigations, it has been found that the child has been administered 20 doses of polio vaccination. All cases of acute flaccid paralysis, by default, get investigated in the country as polio.
