Paandiyoda Galatta Thaangala Movie Review

Critic's Rating: 1.0/5
Synopsis: The ghost of a watchman terrorises the occupants of a mansion, but eventually helps save the place.

Review: There is a difference between making a child-friendly film and a childish film, and Paandiyoda Galatta Thaangala belongs in the latter category. The film wants to be a laugh riot with ghosts, and the director has packed in a bevy of B-list comedians in the cast. The problem is that these comedians, unlike the top-level ones, need strong set-ups to shine, but are provided with ones that are lame and downright dull, even for the most undemanding of kids.

Like the recent Jumbulingam, this, too, takes a very long time to kick-off and for almost an hour into the film, we are forced to put up with the shenanigans of the people who populate the lodge — a young man who sells stuffed toys (Nithin Sathyaa), a small-time thief (Yogi Babu), a middle-aged man who is trying to become a film star (Singampuli), a fake doctor (Swaminathan), the drunkard watchman (Mayilsamy, playing the titular character, Paandi), the mansion’s owner (Imman Annachi) and so on. There is also a ghostbuster (Mano Bala) in this mix. Each one is provided with a sub-plot, and each of these is cringe-worthy.

The plot, if one can call it that, kicks in when the watchman dies due to an accident but believes that the mansion’s inmates are responsible for his death. His ghost, which enters a stuffed monkey toy, decides to torment them by ruining their love lives. This revenge angle is a cliché in horror films, and the film tries to mine it solely for comedy. It could have worked, but only if the director had known how to take it forward in an interesting way. Here, the intended comic sequences fall flat and do not raise a single laugh. Yes, not even a single laugh! Forget the ghost, the only atrocity that we find here is the existence of this thoroughly uninspiring film.
