Belagavi: The arrival of monsoon might bring joy to many people, but not for the 1,200 families in Ashraya Colony, Rukmini Nagar, in the city.
Basic amenities like proper roads and drains are missing from the colony established nearly 20 years ago. As a result, the entire colony gets inundated whenever there is a heavy spell of rain. On many occasions, rainwater enters houses, forcing people to stay outdoors.

There are also instances when snakes enter houses along with the rainwater. As the water gets stagnated on the roads and backyards of houses for months, the residents have to endure the foul smell and live in fear of the spread of diseases.
"People in backward villages and forests are leading a better life than us. We are fed up of going and standing before the staff of the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) seeking better facilities," said Kamala Patil, a resident of the colony.
"The officials are busy making Belagavi a Smart City, but they are not worried about the problems of the people of an area which is situated in the heart of the city," said Ramesh Potdar, a social worker and resident of the colony.
G Prabhu, commissioner, BCC said that he is not aware of the problems at Ashraya Colony. "I will instruct the officials concerned to visit the colony to know the problems and also take up drainage work to ensure free flow of rainwater," he added.
