The Thiruvananthapuram Rural police have taken into custody a notorious goon and habitual offender, Shaji alias Pothu Shaji, 38, in connection with the death of a 65-year old man in Vithura.

According to the police, Shaji has been held for allegedly murdering Krishnan Ashary, who hailed from Mekkumkara in Anapetti, near Vithura. He was found dead on Wednesday at another of the victim’s residences at Thevanpara near Tholicode. The police said that Krishnan Ashary, who has been living alone for a few months, and Shaji were neighbours and they used to consume liquor at the former’s house frequently.

The sleuths were examining the statements of other neighbours of Krishnan Ashary that they could hear loud noises from his house in the late hours of Tuesday during one such booze session.

The post-mortem of the deceased revealed that he was assaulted using a heavy object and had many contusions on various parts including his head and chest.

He has been arrested under the Kerala Antisocial Activities (Prevention) Act on multiple occasions in the past.
