Security upgraded for resident doctors at IGMCH
Nagpur: The directorate of medical education and research (DMER) has notified the norms for safety of resident doctors on June 10 at all government hospitals across the state. Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMC) implemented all the rules on Thursday while Government Medical College (GMC) has already put the rules in action six months back. According to the rules, at any time only four relatives will be allowed to enter OPD, Casualty or Ward Block where the patient is admitted.
Relatives can meet the patient through an entry pass. Only two entry passes will be given to the relatives for every patient, and they will be allowed to meet the patients between 4pm and 7pm only.
There will be three security guards at casualty and four guards at OPD available for any particular shift. Every single guard on the premises will have access to a walkie-talkie to manage things promptly. Total 150 CCTV cameras have been installed across the hospital premises with a proposal for 50 more cameras already in process. A protection committee has also been formed to look after the implementation with Ashok Gajbhiye, medical superintendent, as president. The committee has to coordinate with doctors, security guards and the police booth inside the premises.
From January 15 till date, there have been four incidents of attack on resident doctors by family members of patients. Such a situation is mostly faced by doctors at OPD and causality. “The regulations have finally been bought into place after all the commotion created by resident doctors few months back. They had been assured of improved security measures within the premises,” said Gajbhiye.
GMC dean Abhimanyu Niswade said, “After frequent incidents of violence, we had to implement tight security at our premises. We have been following all the rules from the last six months.”
