CHANDIGARH: A farmer in debt committed suicide in Mansa on Wednesday night. Jaswinder Singh, 40, of Jhunir village ended his life by hanging from a ceiling fan at his home.
ASI Amrik Singh said Jaswinder's wife Gurmeet Kaur in her statement had told police that the family owned five acres of land but had to sell two acres a couple of years ago to repay part of their debt.
"Her husband tried his hand at some other vocations as well but couldn't make much money. So he was tilling the remaining three acres now and owed Rs 3 lakh to a bank and a moneylender," the cop said.
