Surat: Ukai dam water level falls to 284 feet

The delay in monsoon has triggered the fall in the water level.

The water level in Ukai dam Thursday slipped to 284 feet, closer to its dead stock level of 270 feet. The delay in monsoon has triggered the fall in its water level. Ukai dam is the major source of water for drinking and agriculture for the people of Surat and south Gujarat. Last year, in the first week of June, the water level in the dam was at 299 feet.

Sources in Irrigation department said that with 284 feet of water level, the dam has 700 Million Cubic Meter (MCM) of water. The Ukai dam can store water up to 7,414 MCH, which is 345 feet. Out of 7,414 MCM, 6,730 MCM water is kept for live storage while 688 MCM water is kept for the dead storage. An official with Ukai dam said, “We are hoping the rainfall might start in the next few days, but if it takes more time then the situation will worsen. At present, there is 700 MCM water left in the dam. The discharge of water has been totally stopped.”
