After weeks of controversy which sparked nothing short of a national debate, 'Udta Punjab', which is releasing today, leaked online two days before hitting the theatres. The producers, Phantom Films and Balaji Motion Pictures, immediately sprang into action and lodged a complaint with the Cyber Crime Cell. While the film's team tried to pull it down, till the time of going to press, a few download links were still available.Surprisingly, the leaked version is said to be a print of good quality.
It carries a watermark stating 'for censor' on the print, raising suspicions that someone from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) has a hand in leaking the movie.

When BT contacted CBFC chief Pahlaj Nihalani, he sternly denied the allegations and said, 'During the examining or revising, the film's DVD is brought by the filmmakers and taken back by them. At no point of time does any member of our team has any possession of it. It is possible that the film might have been leaked during transit.'
He further added, 'The movie leaked on Wednesday afternoon, while we got a copy of it from the court only at 6.30 pm. It is highly impossible that anyone from the CBFC has done it. Why aren't you questioning the producers of the film? There is a possibility they might have done it to gain some publicity.'
When questioned why the makers would jeopardise the box office fate of their own film, Pahlaj said, 'Woh tum unko jake pucho'.' We tried getting in touch with the film's director Abhishek Chaubey and producer Anurag Kashyap, but they remained unavailable for comment.
