The Army paid tribute to Signalman Ajay Singh Choudhary in a solemn wreath-laying ceremony at Badami Bagh cantonment here today. The soldier was killed in the gunfight at the Machil sector in Kupwara on Wednesday.
An Army spokesman said Signalman Ajay was part of his unit’s quick reaction team, which was the first to intercept and engage an infiltrating column of militants in the highly inhospitable terrain of Machil on June 14. “Displaying exceptional gallantry and selflessness, he continued to engage the terrorists — killing one — despite being grievously wounded. He was evacuated from the encounter site but later succumbed to his injuries,” he added.
The 24-year-old slain soldier from Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, is survived by his parents, wife Meena Devi and a 10-month-old son.
Chinar Corps Commander Lt Gen Satish Dua said, “Such exemplary acts have always served as an inspiration to not only the uniformed men but also to the entire nation.”
