Haas: Romain Grosjean's front wing did not fail in Canada

Haas team principal Guenther Steiner says Romain Grosjean's front wing issue in Canada was not a failure but a result contact with teammate Esteban Gutierrez.

After the Montreal race Grosjean called on Haas to get to the bottom of its front wing problems after suffering what he thought was his fourth failure of the season. In Canada he had pitted for a late replacement which relegated him to 15th.

However, Steiner says the problem with the wing was not structural but instead came down to the two Haas cars coming together on lap one.

"It was damaged when they got together at the start," Steiner explained. "Esteban and Romain got together and then we saw that there was damage on the pit stop but we thought wrongly that it would last but it didn't and the cascade came off. It was due to the crash it was not a failure, it was damage. We took pictures at the pit stop and we knew there was damage and we just decided not to replace it because we were thinking that it would last but obviously it didn't with the vibrations."

When if he was concerned by the manufacturing of the Dallara wing, he replied: "No, to be honest no, but then again I cannot say no because next thing it breaks tomorrow. With these things you never know so I don't want to be 'it's all sorted' because it's always something different but if it happens tomorrow we will have to tell you why it happened and it will be something different but at the moment I'm not concerned no."

Despite acknowledging contact between the pair, Steiner does not think there needs to be rules put in place to prevent anything similar in future.

"I think if you try to give drivers rules you know, good luck to you. It's a start, it's a sport, it's a competition, they both want to be in front. Sure they shouldn't try to run into each other but if I have to tell them that we shouldn't have those drivers.

"That's my opinion about it, I can tell them whatever I want to tell them but the next thing is 'oh I had a bad start, I didn't go near each other' so we try to not to get into each other but can we prevent it? No way. We can do our best but I don't think I have to tell them."
