ABVP delegation meets V-C

A delegation of students from the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), which leads the Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU), met Vice-Chancellor Yogesh Tyagi to demand resuming of evaluation work.

Many teachers have been boycotting evaluation of undergraduate exams for over two weeks now in protest against the latest gazette notification of the University Grants Notification (UGC). The notification increases the number of work hours of permanent teachers and changes the parameters to assess them.

“We have to save the future of thousands of students. Third-year students have already suffered a lot as they are the Four-Year Undergraduate Programme [FYUP] batch. Again, they are being made to suffer due to the protest by teachers’ organisations,” said ABVP national media convener Saket Bahuguna.

“We strongly support the demands of protesting teachers and demand that the government resolve the issues at the earliest, but at the same time we appeal to all the teachers of Delhi University not to play with the future of thousands of students and resume evaluation work immediately,” he added.

Memorandum

The students have also submitted a memorandum to the V-C.

“We demand that the university administration take steps to ensure that no injustice is done to the students and evaluation of answer sheets is done at the earliest,” the memorandum read.

The ABVP delegation comprised Saket Bahuguna, Delhi state secretary Bharat Khatana, State joint secretary Priya Sharma and DU unit president Abhishek Verma.

Meanwhile, the protesting teachers have been trying to make students understand the reason behind the protest.

Delhi University Teachers’ Association (DUTA) president Nandita Narain had on Monday written an open letter to students explaining how the latest UGC notification has affected them and how it is going to affect the education system. She also appealed to the students to co-operate with them, while assuring them that “they [the teachers] are equally concerned about students’ future”.
