250 to join International Day of Yoga on June 19

Kota Kinabalu: About 250 yoga practitioners will be gathering here to commemorate the International Day of Yoga on June 19.The gathering being organised by the Himalayan Yoga Science Society Sabah (HYSSS) would also be an opportunity for the public to learn more about yoga.

HYSSS President Datuk Rajah Indran said medical practitioner, Dr Shelley Bhardwaj, would also give a talk about yoga for wellness at the gathering to be held at the Damai community hall.

"Yoga is not only about a form of exercise but it is a way of life that promotes peace, harmony and the rational management of our planet's resources," he said.

The event is scheduled to be launched by Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Jainab Ahmad.

He said among the highlights of the gathering would be the launching of the society's tree planting project.

"We will be distributing moringa tree saplings to those interested to plant them in their surroundings," Rajah said, adding that the public would also the opportunity to learn more about the multiple benefits of the moringa.

"We chose moringa because it has been described as a miracle tree for its multi-purpose use," he said.

Rajah said pharmacologists have ascertained that moringa is enriched with vitamins, enzymes, amino acids, fats, minerals, antioxidants and its leaves contain more vitamin C than oranges as well as high levels of calcium.

He said the tree planting initiative was also part of the society's contribution in tackling global warming and climate change.
