Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, through its 100 per cent subsidiary Coastal Gujarat Power Ltd (CGPL), strongly believes in promoting holistic health and wellbeing of its employees and stakeholders. In keeping with this commitment, CGPL organized an awareness program for its employees and stakeholders about ill effects of tobacco and motivate employees to abstain from it, on the occasion of World No Tobacco Day 2016. The program instilled willpower in 150 participants to quit tobacco.

The program focused on sensitizing employees and associates of CGPL on the most likely sources of tobacco and its products, ill effects of consuming tobacco based products, ways to quit consuming tobacco products, and the benefits associated with quitting tobacco. The medical team of CGPL ensured that the program was interactive, wherein participants were encouraged to share their experiences of dependency on tobacco based products, and providing valuable professional guidance on ways to reduce dependency and tips to quit tobacco.

Speaking on this initiative, Mr. K. K. Sharma, CEO and ED - CGPL, said 'It's our constant endeavour to improve and promote a healthy lifestyle among our employees and stakeholders. To this effect, we conduct various preventive and educative health related workshops for our employees and stakeholders across India. Through the World No Tobacco Day, we have tried to educate our employees and stakeholders on the ill effects of tobacco; while also equipping them with ways of quitting this addictive habit.'

World No Tobacco Day is one of the eight official global public health campaigns set up by WHO and is observed on May 31. It is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption including smoking, chewing tobacco, sniffing, and the like. The day is further earmarked to draw attention to the widespread prevalence of tobacco use and its negative health effects, which currently lead to nearly 6 million deaths each year worldwide, including 600,000 of which are the result of non-smokers being exposed to second-hand smoke.
