Govt releases 1,470 tonnes of grains to farmers in Adamawa

NGO to empower 2000 IDPs in Yobe, Gombe

The Federal Government has presented 1,470 tonnes of grains to farmers across the 21 Local Government areas of Adamawa State to cushion the effect of the Boko Haram attacks in the state. 
Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Mr. David Babachir, who presented the food items to representatives of the Local Government yesterday in Yola, said that the gesture was to cushion the hardship occasioned by the attacks on the people of the state by Boko Haram insurgents.

“For the past two years, thousands of farmers and their families were not been able to farm due to Boko Haram attacks. The development has caused a lot of adversity to the people in the state.

“The food items donated is aimed at reducing the difficulties, especially those in the worst hit seven local government areas in the state,” Babachir said.

This is coming as the Peace Rehabilitation and Reconciliation Initiative (PRRI) a non governmental organisation, is set to flag off the second phase of its rehabilitation programme for returning Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) whose homes were ravaged by the Boko Harem insurgency soon.

The second phase of the programme expected to last from June 19 to 30 will cover Yobe and Gombe returning IDPS and is targeted at empowering 2,000 farming families, the group said.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer (PRO) Yusuf Msheliza, said PRRI will be helping to return 1,000 IDPs in each of the two states back to their various settlements across the two states.

It will be recalled that the group has visited several Borno communities where it made donations of over N40 million to over 1000 returning IDPs

According to the News Agency of Nigeri (NAN), Babachir who was represented by Mr. Ibrahim Bapatel, a Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari on Political Affairs, said that the exercise was part of Federal Government’s effort in assisting communities of six states in the Northeastern region affected by Boko Haram attacks.

He said that the seven worst hit areas of the state that include Madagali, Michika, Mubi North, Mubi South, Maiha, Hong and Gombi would be given special consideration in the distribution of the food items.

Responding, the Deputy Gov. of Adamawa State, Martins Babale, thanked the Federal Government for the gesture.
