The Munnar grama panchayat on Wednesday issued closure notice to two more resorts in old Munnar following a joint inspection by the Panchayat and Health Department officials on Tuesday. The inspection team found that the resorts dumped waste from sceptic tanks to the Muthirapuzha through a sewage channel. Panchayat secretary J. Madusoodanan Unnithan said on Wednesday that it was found that many resorts, hotels, and houses dumped wastes from sceptic tanks to the river, either through underground sewage pipes or through open water channels. He said action would be taken against all resorts and hotels dumping waste to the river. The joint inspection will continue till all sceptic tanks that open to the river are demolished. On Tuesday and Wednesday, earthmovers were engaged to demolish sceptic tanks attached to hotels, resorts and houses. He said that nine sceptic tanks that opened to the river were removed and notice issued to build alternative and safe sceptic tanks. — A Correspondent
