Asha (25), a Dalit sarpanch of Bidhan Patti in Balu village, was today persuaded to remove her ‘ghoonghat’ (veil) by SDM Om Parkash during an open durbar at Balu village here.

The SDM said women should shed hesitation and work for the development of the country. Asha addressed the villagers and vowed to work for the eradication of social evils, such as the purdah system, dowry and female foeticide. She exhorted women to take active part in development activities.

Impressed by the courage shown by the sarpanch, the SDM announced to honour her on Independence Day.
